Walk Host: Liz Jackson
Coach trip: 07:00 corner of Midstocket Road and Gordondale Road.
The main walk is 24km (15 miles) with an ascent of 1070m. A walk duration of eight hours including stops. The terrain is not very difficult, and once up top, there are no more big ascents.
This route is good for shorter options, depending on demand. The first is to miss out the out and back section between the east and west summits. Omitting this will reduce the length to 18km. The second option is to miss out An Socach altogether and follow the path up to Sgor Mor from where the bridge crosses the river at 130823. This would reduce the walk length to 16km.
We start at 138832 on the A93, south of Braemar and follow the Clunie Water first to the east, then cross to the west bank at 122812, where we start climbing the ridge over Socach Mor to the East top at 938m. We turn SW to the West summit of An Socach, 944m. We return to the East top before heading generally north over Sgor Mor, 887m,, Creag a'Mhadaidh 804m, Carn an Drochaide 830m before finally climbing Morrone, 859m. We descend NE picking up good paths, past the duck pond to finish at the Flying Stag bar of the Fyfe Arms Hotel. The bus will be at the parking area at the entrance to the Highland games park.
