Safety
Hill walking is an activity with a danger of
personal injury or death. Participants in Stocket walks should be aware of
and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and
involvement.
More experienced Club Members may be prepared to have novice and less
experienced members accompany them on the hill as a group. This is
undertaken in an environment of equality and freedom within the Club and
such Members are not acting as leaders. They are not generally qualified
to act as "leaders" or "instructors" and are simply sharing the benefit of
their greater experience.
Participants in Stocket walks should be
aware of and accept the risks
involved in hill walking.
All walkers remain
responsible for themselves and their own actions.
The Club does not take responsibility for
the safety of participants.
The following
suggestions are made as to good practice for groups on the hill:
-
Experienced
walkers should always show consideration to those less proficient or hill
fit.
-
Moderate the
pace to suit the majority of the group.
-
Assess the
situation on the hill constantly and be prepared to return or alter the
route if necessary.
-
Keep together in
conditions of poor visibility.
-
Make regular
stops for the party to regroup and for tea and lunch
breaks.
-
Wait for and
assist each other at any difficulties, such as burn crossings and steep
ground.
-
Be conversant
with the proposed route and the groups
whereabouts at all times.
-
Be aware of the
condition and capability of other participants and be prepared to assist
them if necessary.
Remember that the
primary aim is the enjoyment and safety of all participants, not a
race to the top.
