This is a
joint bus meet with the Cairgorm Club, which gets us a half price bus and
hence a cheap walk. The Stockets will organise a main walk and an
alternative as usual, whereas the Cairngorm Club members may want to do
their own thing, although they are welcome to walk with the Stockets (and
vice versa)
Main Walk

km (15 miles), walk duration 8 hrs with stops
The walk starts at Achavan
in Glen Isla (191686) and heads N following the river as far as 185733,
where we start to climb the ridge to Monega Hill (186757). From the top we
head NW over Little Glas Maol to Glas Maol (166766) and then turn SW to
Creag Leacach. We continue to follow the ridge SW over several tops to Carn
an Daimh, where we drop down to Tombi (121701) and then take the track W to
the Spittal of Glenshee Hotel (111699) where the bus should be waiting.
Alternative Walks
There are several options
for a shorter day, with the route(s) to be decided depending on the party
and the weather. Monamenach can be climbed by going W from Achavan, followed
by a descent NW and then SW to pick up the track in Gleann Carnach and
eventually the Cateran Trail out to the Spittal. This is 11km (7 miles).
A lower level, but longer
option is to cross the river at Auchavan and walk S along the path to Little
Forter (187650) where you join the Cateran Trail W to the Spittal. This is
18km (11 miles) including 4km of road walking in the middle section.
The transport for the above walk is by coach. It will depart from and
return to the former location of Mile End Primary School, on
Gordondale
Road.
