Alternative Walks

One slightly shorter option is to descend NW from Glas Maol over Meall Odhar and then follow the ridge S along a path which brings you to the bus pick up at 138756. Alternatively, folk could use the bus to get up to the Glen Shee car park (142775) and then climb ESE over Meall Odhar to join the main walk on Glas Maol.

CHRISTMAS PARTY (MORVEN)

Walk host: Elaine Kivlichan      email:  elaine.k@ecosse.net

Saturday 6th December

8:00 am departure

Cost £40

Map 37

Expected time back in Aberdeen: 1:30 am

The Stocket Christmas Party this year has a new venue in the Loch Kinnord hotel at Dinnet, where the owner is keen to welcome us, with dinner in the restaurant and entertainment in the newly refurbished Hollytree Lodge.

The fancy dress theme for the evening, as decided at the AGM, is the Olympics and we expect the usual array of outrageous costumes. If you have not been to a Stocket Christmas party, don’t be put off; it’s the highlight of the year; just ask the regulars.

Main Walk, 21 km (13 miles), walk duration 6 hrs with stops

After dropping party gear at the Loch Kinnord, we will start walking from the Pass of Ballater at 364970 and head N up the track to Tom Garchory and then climb N and then E to the summit of Morven (376040). The descent is generally SE over Culblean Hill and then by the Vat Burn to the visitor centre and then across to Meikle Kinord and a short road walk to the hotel (457986).

Alternative Walk

The main walk is quite long for a Christmas Walk and will need quite a fast pace to ensure that the festivities can start on time. The more genteel alternative starts in Ballater and follows the old railway line E to Turnerhall (405980) from where a track leads NE before descending via the Vat Burn. From the visitor centre, walk through the woods round the N side of Loch Kinord and eventually follow a track out towards the hotel.

Even easier alternative is to follow the old railway line all the way from Ballater to Dinnet, although it is recommended to leave the track at 439977 and head a few yards S to get a good view of the river.

NEW YEAR HOOLIE

Saturday 3rd January

8:00 am departure by car from Mile End School

Maps 43, 44, 36 or 37

Expected time back in Aberdeen: 5-6 pm

This year most of us will have four days off to recover from Hogmanay, and may well be in need of some fresh air after a few days. Also many people are working on Hogmanay, so we’ve moved the traditional new year walk until 3rd January. The route will be decided on the day depending on the weather, but will not be too taxing. If anyone would like to volunteer one of their favourite routes for this year, please contact Steve or Graeme.
