YOUR GUIDE TO OUR
SUMMER WALKS
LOCHNAGAR
Sunday 19th July
7:00 am departure
Cost £15, Map 44
Expected time back in Aberdeen: 8-9 pm
Via
the BLACK SPOUT:
1 Munro, 12 miles (19 km), 900m ascent, walk duration 7 hrs with stops
We start at the Spittal of Glenmuick
(310852) and follow the Lochangar track generally W, branching off the
landrover track at 277862. From the bealach below Meikle Pap (260858), we
drop down into the corrie, heading below the cliffs on the S side of the
Lochnagar lochan to ascend the broad gully of the Black Spout, taking the
left hand fork half way up. This brings us to the chock stone, where a bit
of crawling is required to get under the obstructing boulder, before
emerging on the plateau near the summit of Cac Carn Mor and crossing N to
Cac Carn Beag, the true summit of Lochnagar (245862). The ascent of the
Black Spout is steep but not difficult. However, there is a lot of loose
material, so the biggest risk is from rocks dislodged by those above. For
this reason, it is advised to stick closely together, so that anything
that does fall does not have a chance to gather speed.
From the summit, we head SE down the Glas
Allt, eventually descending by the waterfall to Glas-allt-Shiel (276825),
from where we head back NW along the N shore of Lock Muick, before
crossing the foot of the loch from the boat house to return to the day’s
starting point.
Via the Ladder:
1 Munro, 12 miles (19 km), 900m ascent
It is perfectly possible to avoid the Black
Spout by ascending SW up the Ladder from the bealach below Meikle Pap
(260858), then continuing W around the top of the cliffs to the summit of
Lochnagar. Indeed, this route might be followed by all the party if
weather conditions or lack of experienced walkers make this wise.
Low level walks
There are several easier alternatives,
including ascending Conachcraig (heading NE from the track junction at
277862), or just walking round Loch Muick, with a possible extension to
the Dubh Loch.
Saturday
15th August
7:00 am departure
Cost £15, Maps 43 & 36
Expected time back in Aberdeen: 9-10 pm
You
can choose to go on any walk described below.
Over the summit of
Beinn a' Bhird:
1 Munro, 19 miles (30 km), 900m ascent, walk duration 9 hrs with stops
Starting
from Linn of Quoich (117910), we head NW and then N along the track on the
W side of Glen Quoich, before crossing the river around 080947 and
climbing N up An Doillaid and then NE to the summit at the N end of the
plateau (092006). We return S along the plateau, bearing SE before the
South Top to descend the ridge of Carn Fiaclachand then continue SE down
Gleann an t-Slugain to the bus at Keiloch (188913).
Alternatives
A shorter
walk would be to climb Carn na Drochaide (127939) from Linn of Quoich,
before descending to the ruin at 119953, then continuing SE down Gleann an
t-Slugain to the bus at Keiloch (188913).
A lower
level walk is to follow the Quoich (on either the E or W side) as far as
112958, where you join the descent on the main route.

Sunday 13th September
7:00 am departure
Cost £15, Map 43
Expected time back in Aberdeen: 8-9 pm
An Socach, Sgor Mor and Morrone:
2 Munros, 15 miles (24 km), 900m ascent, walk duration around 8 hours with
stops
Starting
from Baddoch (833137), we head SW up the Baddoch Burn to 122811, where we
climb W up the ridge of Socach Mor, before reaching the summit ridge of An
Socach and continuing W to the summit at 080800. The descent then follows
the ridge E then NE to Sgor Mor and on over several tops to Morrone
(132887). From here we descend NE to find the bus opposite the Fife Arms
in the centre of Braemar.
Sgor Mor and Morrone
A
shorter alternative is to ascend Sgor Mor directly from 130824, and then
follow the ridge N to Morrone. An even shorter option is just to climb
Morrone by the track from 153882, descending NE to Braemar.
