The
Feshie Hills on May the
13th 2006
We are just back from another superb Stocket
Walk. With an ominous weather forecast of snow,
the bus left Midstocket Road with 19 walkers on board, heading for
Inverdruie to pick up our
esteemed leader, Steve, who was on a “girlie weekend” at Mar Lodge. He
confessed to feeling slightly fragile but was in good form all the same.
The bus took us to the end of the wee road up Glen
Feshie. We donned gaiters and headed up Coire Ruadh, walking through a
small pine forest and soon coming out onto an excellent airy path all the
way to the top of the ridge. (Now, in South Africa a mixture of rain and
sunshine is called a “monkey’s wedding”. Does anyone out there know what
Scottish snowflakes and sunshine is called?) There was only the
slightest breeze and at most times the views were wonderful.
On
reaching the ridge, it seemed only a hop, skip and a jump to the summit of
Sgor Gaoith which has a fine sharp promontory above the steep crags
leading straight down to Loch Einich. The view of Braeriach defined by
streaks of snow and deep gullies directly opposite was breathtaking.
(Thank goodness no one was silly enough to fall for the old gag “back a
bit” whilst being photographed at such a dramatic view point.)
We then headed north on the broad ridge, summiting
Sgoran Dubh Mor, Sgoran Dubh Beag and Creag Dubh.
Some jumped out of their boots as a glider whooshed
over just above our heads.
The fine walking conditions temporarily deteriorated as
we stumbled steeply down through a treacherous bit of Caledonian forest.
The flat Glen Einich track was reached and we were soon ensconced in the
Coylumbridge Hotel with a nice cup of tea and a cucumber sandwich! – some
able to watch Hearts beat Gretna.
We returned via the Lecht weary but happy. Shame the
loos at Alford were locked.
Thanks to everybody for making it such a wonderful day
and especially thanks to Sylvie for backmarking, Graeme for relieving us
of our cash and Steve for leading from the middle.
