The day did not start well!
It was decidedly foggy and gloomy in Aberdeen; and a replacement bus was
required (the delayed departure did, however, enable one latecomer to
catch the bus).
We were all delighted, and
probably surprised, with the weather in Glenshee on our arrival. It was
bright, sunny, almost completely windless, and most of the mist had
lifted. Remarkable weather for the time of the year, and, fortunately, it
held for the rest of the day. No doubt the good weather kept our spirits
up during the slog up from Baddoch to Carn Aosda.
The shorter-walk party and
the main group meet firstly near the summit of Cairnwell and again at Carn
nan Sac.
During the course of the day
we saw lots of hares and deer. We saw a particularly biggish herd of deer
at Coire Shith. It was clear enough from the sounds coming over the glens
that the 2006 rutting season is not over yet.
The last summit in the
itinerary was Creagan Bheithe. However, most of us ended up on the nearby
peak Creag Lamhaich instead. What would Peter say? Only a few days after
the end of his presidency and already navigational and map reading
competences are going to the dogs!
Most of us made our way to
the Spittal of Glenshee Hotel past the Dalmuhzie House, instead of the
scheduled route, to round the day off in the usual way with beer and
crisps.
No ifs or buts, a good day
out.
